Physical Description: Black sage is a perennial shrub that grows approximately 3-6 ft. tall. It is covered with simple hairs with some glandular hairs, which makes it highly aromatic. The leaves are oblong-elliptic to obovate in shape and are about 1-2.8 in long. The upper surface of the leaf is somewhat glabrous, while the lower surface of the leaf is hairy.  The flowers are usually a pale blue or lavender color, and rarely a pale rose color.

Physical Description: A bushy scrub.  The stems are woody, 8 to 10 feet high, upright and branched, smooth, slightly grooved, brittle, with white pith and covered with an ash-colored bark.  The leaves are 1 to 1.5 inch long, shortly petioled. The primary leaves on the woody shoots are reduced to three-forked spines, with an enlarged base.
